Budget Friendly Bites and Thai Delights In Kalihi, Hawaii
I think that’s one thing that’s bad about Asian food as the service is not the greatest. I wouldn’t bother to stay and support their business no good customer service
I enjoy the fact you’re super honest and straightforward. Idk if I’d go to that restaurant when I’m home on Oahu BUT take out >>YAS<< love your videos
You were just experiencing the infamous "Vietnamese Resting Bitch Face."
Mahalo! Great video & narration of "old time" Kalihi. Funny that I remembered the saying "Kam Shopping Center in Kalihi" (way before the 2 story parking lot was built and also, when you didn't have to say the full name "Kamehameha"). I lived on Kam IV Road (haha, again didn't say Kamehameha) below the Police Substation and across the Egg farm (now KVIBE with donated bikes). As a youngster I'd walk down to P&P Supermarket, Rexall Value Drug store, Barber shop and in the middle my favorite Swan Bakery (great pastries ~ glaze donuts, bismarcks (long johns with cream pudding in them with powdered sugar all on top), their hot buttery rolls, oval butterhorns with the sweet frosting on top, apple turnovers & many more! as I had a sweet tooth (and lots of cavities) LOL.
Thanks for sharing your memories with us! The sweets sound delicious.
To me, service is everything! That's the first thing I look at. Then the food second... no apologies needed... love your channel ❤️ 😊
Thank you! Me too. I'm a total service snob. I don't need exceptional service, but just normal respectful service - even if you're a quiet person or not talkative. If the attitude is nasty, I'll never patronize them again.
Damn… But service is a huge thing though. Thanks for sharing! 🤙🏼
It is. It was a bummer.
I hope you didn't leave a tip. I wouldn't have.
I thought about not leaving one, but thought maybe she had personal issues or a bad day. It was after I paid and drove off that I read this has been going on for years. It's all good. Only a couple of dollars anyway.
@@FoodFiend So she's a habitual 'grumpy' waitress, eh ? Doesn't she realize you (her customers) pay her salary... or couldn't care less ???
Aloha Misty!! Mahalo for the shout out. If the girl gives you weird stares.. I would give her even weirder stares. Lol! Glad you liked the Pho. Nhi really likes this place. Dont know why they wouldnt let you sit where you wanna sit. But gonna go back and talk to the lady with glasses. Just joke. Somebody else will😁 Mahalo for the always honest review🤙
😂 Yeah go talk to her! JK. Thanks for watching Sean. I hope you, Nhi and the baby are doing well.
Your video are always great. I enjoy your reviews, you keep the taste of the food separate, from the service, which I noticed other food channels, cannot separate. You kept it professional & not personal, & I applaud 👏 you for that. I hope someone who can speak that person's language will confront her about her Attitude and service. If she's the owner that is sad, she needs to be off the floor, If she's a worker she needs to be retrained or let go. If there are a lot of bad reviews on the same situation. Something needs to change before this business shuts down .
Mahalo Ed! I get worse attitude at work, so I am used to it. 😂 This place has been open for a couple of years now, and I am surprised they are still in business. I used to go there when it was another pho spot with another name, but they closed down a few years back. Too bad, because that place was friendly and had great food.
Kinda looks like that's her "regular" face. 😠😳
@@chaka3084 well I have a default resting b1tch face but when spoken to I show emotion and the tone of my voice is not nasty. 🤣 she was definitely nasty and kept staring.
The looks had me 😂😂😂😂😂. N the end 😂😂😂😂. But the roll looked good. Im like man thisis giving seinfeld vubes n then you daid that 🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣 right? And I'm George...you know me well so you know what I was silently saying in my head.
@FoodFiend you have no idea how hard I was laughing when I saw your "look". I'm like she's holding back so good rn 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Pho restaurants in Chinatown were notorious for giving customers attitude, it was known and was actually tolerated in the past. The prices has gone up and people are not putting up with the nonsense anymore, but new owners seems to follow the same old way of running a pho restaurant.
@@apepex1464 Yes not going to work in today's economy. But I've been lucky and never had a bad time at any Chinatown pho place. Pho To Chau, Kieu Vietnamese Restaurant, Thoung Au Lac, and Cuu Long were all like old uncle's and aunties with their service. Very friendly.
I just ate at Lams Kutchen and want to try that plcae, friend said good things about it. This is how i look at grouchy people, i feel sorry for them. I dont think they can help their personality and life must suck for them because im sure most people mirror the other person so her life must be sour. Sad. Be the duck.
Yeah their life must suck and they're miserable. But I know many folks like that and you can't change them so I don't really feel sorry for them if they don't want to change their mindset. There are people with terminal illness and poor people without food that have better attitudes and an outlook on life than them.
New sub i like your style, very chill 💜
Thanks so much! 🙏
"The pho nazi instead of the soup nazi." 😂 Food looked good, but bad service puts me off. Too bad that one person made for bad restaurant reviews.
@@tealorturquoise 🤣 yeah you would think they'd get rid of her after years of bad reviews mentioning her. But it doesn't seem like they read their Yelp reviews since there's never any owner response. Maybe she's a family member of the owner. 🤣
Most places I get pho from taste good to me but if the service is not what I prefer I would get it to go. There is a couple of places that I will never eat at but buy food to go. But if anyone working in a restaurant actually makes me feel uncomfortable or upset then I just don't go there.
If I wasn't making a video I would've walked right out. If it's on my private time I don't give people like this the time of day. However making a video, planning it and driving there takes time and I only have one day to do so out of the week. But in a way that's a good thing to spread the word whether it's good or bad so viewers can make their own decision on if they want to patronize the restaurant. That is kind of what the show is about. Can't always win every time. But so far out of over 400 videos only 4 have been horrible. Not bad stats.
You pretty much hit the nail right on the head about service here. With me, not so much the grouchy attitude, but how slow it took just for them to give you a menu then come back to take your order. The last three times I went there, there was only a few others in the restaurant but the waiters just were not attentive to the guest needs and seemed to not even care about servicing anyone. On my last visit I had to walk up to the counter to get my own menu, and after 10 minutes no one ever came to take my order. I just stood up and walked right out. The staff really needs some training in customer service. It's amazing the restaurant has lasted here this long.
Yes they definitely need training in basic service. I am also surprised at how long they lasted. The pho place prior to them had great food and ok service and didn't last.
If they give you bad service, you don't give tip. Tipping is to encourage good service.
I usually don't. But as I grow older I understand we are all human and maybe are going through personal issues or having a bad day so I gave a small one. Usually I am a generous tipper if the service is good. But after I read the reviews on Yelp that this has been a thing for years I regret giving any tip.
5:29 you gave them free advertisement, and they are not friendly to you. Shame on the waiter.
All my videos are technically free advertisement - good or bad. But that's what makes it exciting because I go in the spontaneously and whatever happens happens. 🤙
I can tell you felt bad saying all that but you’re just being honest. It’s their job to make your experience enjoyable if they want you there and if they treat you like that they can’t expect people to have a good time. For me if the food is good but the service is bad i wont go back and I will talk about it and tell others about it. When you have a business treat your customers right or fail it in. Me BBQ in Waikiki had a really grumpy ladies thats was super rude and their food was good but bad service, they went out of business. Unfortunately that lady will be the reason that place does not do well. I wont go there for sure! I rather eat ok food with great happy service than good food with bad service! Good job Misty! And thanks for the warning. She must be the braty daughter or neice of the owner. Too bad for them. 😵
Thanks PhotoLuke! Yes me too. I'd rather eat at a mediocre place with good service than the opposite. I've never heard of that bbq place in Waikiki but wow no surprise they went out of business. This place has been open for years amazingly. Don't know how or why when there's so many other great options in Chnatown for less nastiness in attitude. Have a great weekend! 🤙
@ yes have a great weekend Misty 🤗
You should check out I Love Grill when it opens. Last restaurant there was Aunty z's in school street.
Thanks for the recommendation. I did hear about Aunty Zs closing. So sad.
I was going to ask if it's the lady with the glasses. She will never get a tip. She is a bully. Ill pass on that. I would help her out. lol
It was the lady in the blue shirt and glasses. There was a lady with glasses in a green shirt who was smiley but was not my server. Give that grouch a hug Walt! 🤣
@@FoodFiend no worries. Karma is a itch!!!
❤😊
🤙😊
no matter how good the food is, crappy service ruins everything!! happened to me at eggs n things Koolina once, where our server had the nastiest attitude and obviously skipped over us each time to service other tables, didn't check on us, or even refilled our waters!
Yes I agree! Especially if it's hostile and nasty. I'm so sorry you had that experience at Koolina. You'd think they'd be more cherry because of all the tourists. You can't distinguish locals from tourists. I mean you could've been visiting from Maui. Anyways all should be treated equal in customer service if you're paying for the food and dine in.
I hate hostile environments. If I couldn't sit where I wanted to reasonably sit in an empty restaurant, I would talked to the owner and have walked out. Good food goes with friendly service. No excuse for hostility.
Yes I agree. I would've done that, but for filming I needed content and drove all the way over there and my first option was closed. Hopefully it spreads the word to be cautious of the waitress.
i understand what u mean by a grump hard to enjoy your meal. i love pho enjoy your food if its good no worry just give the grump the stink eye i had that experience with a grump at that bakery in waimalu shopping center in fact that grump was working there the second time i went
Is that the Japanese bakery? I wanted to go but they were closed because it was Monday. If it is, then I'll be prepared for grouchiness. 🤣
yes nagoya bakery but their coconut n azuki bread 3:31 real good i just give her the stink eye its an older lady
I live 1 block or so from there. How have I never tried that place in 18 years??
When it was Pho My Lan it was amazing both in food and service. It then became something else like Broken Rice or something and now this newer place that has been opened for a few years.
Food looked delicious and your honest take on it. However, hope you didn't feel obligated to tip the rude waitress! We've dined out with horrible service, and they'll get tipped accordingly!! $0
I would've but I'm a softie and have 15% anyway thinking maybe she was having personal issues. It wasn't until I parked and read the Yelp reviews that I found out this has been going on for years. It's ok.
I live near Chinatown. I would not go in there knowing there's a chance I'll get served by that rude lady. I feel like giving a negative review on Yelp just for the hell of it.:)
Lol. Thanks. Yeah no more for me.
❤I had a wonderful time with you. They usually are grouchy and I agree she should of let you sit where ever you wanted too. Thank you, I enjoyed it as well. Keep on eating..😂
Mahalo! Yes there's always next time with a business that treats you like they want your business. 🤙
The spring rolls looked tasty & big, nice and thick. lol ❤ pho nazi.
Thanks for the valuable info. I can't tolerate negative vibes when I'm eating at a restaurant, even if it was free! Maybe this is why we tip or don't tip? I would not be able to leave a tip for her and be happy with myself. Mahalo for suffering for us.
Mahalo seekidea!
That was too true. I used to go to this Chinese restaurant in Kaimuki because the owner was soo friendly and I think it rubbed off on the wait help. Food was good too but if it wasn't for the service I would not have frequented it as much as I did.
Yes good vibes rub off as well as negative vibes. Life's too short to be a grouch.
Looks like you ready fo scrap sistah Misty. WOT?!?! Like scrap fukah?!?! 😂😂😂😂 see you next week thurs!
Lol yes. Too bad I don't talk like I usually do on camera. Then there'll be lots of beep beeps all over the place. 🤣
I will not eat where I feel disrespected.
🤙
What the Pho is that waitresses problem? I wouldn't want to eat there if the vibes aren't Irie. I had the brisket Pho at Ha Long in Waikamilo Center when I was in Hawaii 🔥
Ha Long is great! We used to eat there all the time before they moved to the Dillingham SC. They used to be near Youngs Fish Market on Kalani St. Ribs and Broth is another bangah!
I like your honesty, Misty. Sometimes when employees are pilau, I no like go back even if the food is ono. More places with aloha-spirited employees and ono food especially on Oahu...got plenty of choices. thanks for telling it like it is. :)
So weird because people in Hanoi were so friendly everywhere I went. I did feel some of this in Saigon. But here at all pho places in Chinatown usually they are super friendly.
The end was so funny!
🤣 glad you stayed until the end and had a laugh.
Great honest title!
Mahalo Roy.
It is what it is sistah you gave an honest and True to yourself vlog I respect the truth and appreciate you not blowing smoke up my ass keep up da Great Content Alohaz!
Mahalo and God bless. 🤙
Hi sista. Food looks ono. To bad the waitress was a b***h. Even if the food was good, I wouldn't go back. It's their loss. Thanks sis have awesome night 😘.
Yeah after that I was kind of over it. Mahalo for sticking it out.
Thanks for the review! It use to be called Pho My Lan and was my go to, but now...meh. Mama Pho at Ala Mo is my new spot.
Yessss! That's what it was. We used to go all the time and it was great. Now these new owners are meh.
Parking is only for the condo tenants. Can't remember if the building even had guest parking stalls. My friend's parents used to own the mart (Pensacola Mart) before it became Yobo Mart. Heard lots of good thing about this Yobo Mart, but haven't been in the neighborhood in years. Food in the video looks good.
Ah good to know and thanks for confirming. 🤙
nothing worse than great food but shiet service lol... for me, difficult to go back.
Yeah a no go for me. Plenty of other awesome pho spots. Everyone I went to so far has been cherry with food and service here on Oahu.
Aaaargh! I hate bad and unfriendly service, too. It's the worst. At least your food was delicious. Cám ón.👍
Mahalo Alan! That's OK. Off to Pho Vietnam I go to try their food instead.
No mo da Pho restaurant on River Street, da one between Hotel and King Street? Dat one used to have one line around da block every day, except Sunday if I rememba correctly Never went to that one, too long da line LOL but I’m guessing dat bugga was good
I went there to film in one of my Chinatown videos a while back. Super good food and grandma serving me was a sweetheart. You should try em. Pho To Chau is the name.
Your review is very honest and fair, and bad service can even spoil the taste of the food, but you praise the pho and summer rolls (which look really good!). If I do find myself in the area and am in the mood for pho, I think I would try it, and I will be prepared for the not-so-friendly lady.
Good luck my friend! Let me know your experience. The other lady in the green shirt was smiley.
Never apologize for being honest! Not your problem if people choose to suck ass with their service.
Mahalo!
👍Smaaash it👍 (was that you swearing at the end? Couldn’t quite make it out)
I was making fun of the pronunciation Pho Que sounds like a swear word when pronounced improperly.
